FAQ

Q. How do I know you are a qualified tutor?
A. Before you hire me you may view my teaching certification and degrees.

Q. How will you assess my child’s tutoring needs?
A. You will have some idea what subjects or skills your child needs to begin with.  Once you decide what areas you think your child will need help in; I will give them an official assessment test from their current grade level; for example if they need help in 3rd grade Math I will administer the 3rd grade TAKS test from the previous year and evaluate which objectives need to be considered.  I will then review the test results with you.

Q. How do you decide what to teach my child after the initial assessment?
A. If your child needs specific subject tutoring I will create an objective specific tutoring plan for up to 6 weeks.  If you want additional tutoring we will discuss that after the weekly progress meetings (part of the tutoring time). Generally, I will have a strong idea of what areas your child may be weak in and will plan according to those needs.

Q. Will I be able to sit in on my child’s tutoring sessions?
A. Any student under 18 years old is encouraged to have a parent or guardian present in the session or at least in the same room so that all safety issues are clearly covered.  During the sessions the instruction is strictly between the student and myself as tutor.  Interruptions are discouraged because the child is my focus and his/her learning is the priority.

Q. May I check your background?
A. You are welcome to check my background as well as my credentials. In order to be certified this check must be done anyway.

Q. When will you provide feedback to the parent or guardian?
A. Immediately after the session is completed.  I will also provide you with a written report at the next session for the previous one. I will also write a comprehensive report at the conclusion of all sessions to note your child’s progress. This will be done after a final assessment is given.

Q. Where do you meet for the tutoring sessions?
A. I am happy to meet in your home, my home, a public library or other quiet public place. This is determined at the time a contract is signed for services.

Q. Do you accept students with behavioral, emotional or learning disorders?
A. No, I do not. I am not a qualified special education educator and am not equipped to teach or handle any special needs issues. I can work with students with ADD & ADHD but not Dyslexia, Autism or any other special needs. I also do not work with bi-lingual children, as I am fluent only in English. I only can accept bi-lingual students if a parent are present fulltime in the session to translate and this is not the best situation for the student. I can recommend several bi-lingual teachers I know.

Q. What are your rates?
A. That depends on the service.  Please see my rates at my website. www.TexasLearningAcademy.com

Q. What can you tell me about yourself?
A. Please see my “ All About Me” page on my website at www.teachingtotes.com.
