5 Pumpkin Facts for Kids

Our kids love to learn fun facts and this time of year it's all about the pumpkins, apples, leaves, and Fall things! We hope you enjoy these pumpkin fun facts we've collected for you!

  1. Fruits that are grown from the pistil of a flower are berries, so that makes a pumpkin a berry! Learn more about this here: Is Pumpkin a Fruit or a Vegetable? The Surprising Answer | Trusted Since 1922 (rd.com)

2. These days we use pumpkin puree in the filling of our pumpkin pie, but as Oakland County, Michigan Teaching Tote specialist and first grade teacher Kelly Brooks discovered in her research, early pumpkin pie recipes used the pumpkin for the crust of the pie rather than the filling! Check out this colonial pumpkin pie recipe and this brief history of pumpkin pie from The Library of Congress to learn more!

3. People used to carve turnips rather than pumpkins this time of year! Pumpkins are larger and easier to carve, so I'm glad we've made the switch! Watch this video from the Smithsonian Magazine to learn more.

4. Here's a unique trick to try! Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on the lid of your jack-o-lantern to create a lovely pumpkin spice scent when it's lit!

5. Pumpkins have been a popular kitchen staple for as long as they have partly because of their long shelf life! When properly stored, they can be left unrefrigerated for 3-12 months! How cool is that?
