Hi, I'm Melinda Hayward! Your Wayne County, MI Teaching Tote specialist!
About Melinda:
Hello families! I’m Melinda and I’m excited to be a part of Teaching Totes. I’ve been in the early childhood-special education field for almost 30 years. I started my career in Head Start programs and then became a Developmental Therapist in Early Intervention (birth to age 3) programs in Illinois & Indiana. As a Developmental Therapist, I helped children and their families by creating and individualizing therapeutic play activities for them to incorporate into their daily routine. I value sensory play, as well as educational, open-end toys and materials to facilitate learning, interactive play, communication, and creativity.
In addition to my early childhood experience, I have been homeschooling my children, who are now teenagers, for the past 8 years. I’ve enjoyed how homeschooling has allowed them to benefit from individualized lessons and specific curriculum to adjust for their learning differences. I intend on following a similar approach with my totes, as families can give their input regarding what types of toys, materials, and activities may be better suited for their child/children, based on their learning style.
